Chapter 5

Still running on the endorphins produced the night before, Cash arrived at work bright and early the following morning. He walked into the office kitchen with an extra skip in his step, unaware that his boss was seated at the table tucked into the far corner of the room.

“So tell me, how are things going with you and the McCauley girl.”

Cash froze. He nearly dropped the carafe of hot coffee he held. Milton Mallard hadn’t been in town more than 24 hours. He couldn’t possibly know any details about Cash’s relationship with Shana.

Unless someone had been keeping an eye on Cash.

Cash gave himself a mental shake and attempted to regain his composure. Obviously, someone shared a story with Mallard, but it couldn’t have been more than that.

Not wanting to share more information than necessary, Cash tried to look perplexed.

“What do you mean?”

Mallard’s eyes narrowed and his nostrils flared. It was the same look he wore when a business adversary wouldn’t bend to his will.

Unwilling to drop the topic, Mallard persisted, “Word around town is you two are a hot new item.”

It didn’t matter why Mallard wanted to know about Cash’s relationship with Shana, the fact that he cared at all was cause for concern. It was never a good thing for Milton Mallard to show interest in your personal life.

Things were still so new and fresh between Cash and Shana. There was no way in hell he would jeopardize that by exposing her to Milton Mallard.

“The mechanic?”

Cash shook his head.

“She helped me out when I had a bit of car trouble. That’s all.”

Of course, Mallard would never let Cash off so easy. The man hadn’t amassed his fortune by being passive.

“That’s not what I heard,” he insisted. “Why, you two were the talk of the diner this morning!”

Mallard leaned forward and pinned Cash with a smile he imagined was meant to be friendly. Instead, it set the hairs on the back of Cash’s neck on end. His sinister, shark-like grin may have spread from one of Mallard’s ears to the other, but his beady black eyes remained cold and hollow.

“Come now, you can tell me. Is this a serious thing, or are you just grabbing yourself a hot little piece of country ass while you’re in town?”

Disgusted, Cash considered knocking Mallard in his jaw right then and there. It would be quick and so easy. The greedy, old sycophant would never see it coming.

Flexing his fingers, Cash tried to determine the proper angle to cause the most damage with the least effort. While sizing up the situation, his eyes happened to land on the security camera posted in the corner, just above Mallard’s head.

Reminding himself that Milton Mallard possessed a stable of lawyers whom he loved to trot out for even the slightest infraction, Cash grit his teeth and forced his fisted fingers to relax. The best way to protect Shana was to pretend he barely knew her.

“Like I said, nothing is going on. You know how these small towns are.
